Cleaners to Avoid:
For starters, there are several options to be avoided at all costs. Both hydrogen peroxide and bleach, for example, can wreak havoc on your upholstery. Additionally, ammonia-based cleaners should be avoided. These can damage your touch screens by removing their anti-fingerprint and anti-glare coatings. Furthermore, never use anything abrasive when cleansing a touchscreen. This includes tissues or paper towels. Finally, use common sense. Don't treat all surfaces the same.
What to Do to Clean Your Car for Covid-19:
Most importantly, wear gloves if disinfecting and cleaning your vehicle. The Centers for Disease Control recommends the following:
"Gloves and any other disposable PPE used for cleaning and disinfecting the vehicle should be removed and disposed of after cleaning; wash hands immediately after removal of gloves and PPE with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol if soap and water are not available."cdc.gov
Apply Alcohol-Based Cleaners
The CDC recommends cleaning with alcohol-based solutions with 70% alcohol is most effective. Not only does Alcohol kill Covid-19, but it is friendly to most vehicle surfaces. Just be sure to keep it away from leather. Most leather has a protective layer, but if you don't know the manufacturer's specifications, you are much better to be safe rather than sorry.
Soap and Water
Another great solution which works on most surfaces, including leather seats, is a simple mix of soap and water. Just be sure not to scrub too aggressively, or get the fabrics too damp.
Microfiber Towels or 100% Cotton Cloth
Generally speaking, microfiber towels and/or old cotton t-shirts are a useful solution that can be applied almost anywhere.
Regarding Leather Surfaces
Notwithstanding that leather has been frequently mentioned above, it bears repeating again. Avoid alcohol, ammonia-based cleaners, hydrogen peroxide, and bleach. Leather disinfecting wipes are ideal, but applying water and soap with a damp cloth is likely to do the trick.
Certainly, the most effective solution to stop community spread of Covid-19 is to just stay home and not share your vehicle. If you must share a car, however, drive a rental, get your car serviced, or transport others, then regular disinfecting is the best way to keep yourself and others safe.
